We are currently recruiting for a full-time (1.0 FTE) Middle School Librarian and department head for the 2013-14 school year.

Responsibilities
• Encourage students to read!
• Collaborate with faculty to ensure library resources, programs and projects are aligned with and compliment the curriculum. Regularly communicate to faculty and students what curriculum support is available, which includes books, periodicals, internet, etc.
• Ensure the orderly day-to-day operation of the Middle School library, while also maintaining an inviting and innovative educational environment for students and faculty. Develop and communicate library policies and procedures; conduct new faculty, staff and student library orientations; supervise students and the computer lab; and assist faculty and students with information and resource requests.
• Collaborate with teachers on developing information literacy and research lessons associated with classroom projects.
• Work in partnership with the Upper School library team on vision, collection development and programming. Provide leadership during the comprehensive curriculum review that the school will undertake in the fall of 2013.
• Serve as the Department Head for the MS library. Participate in the Middle School Department Head and cross-divisional Department Heads group meetings.
• Supervise the library assistant.
• Teach a 5th grade information literacy and library skills course.
• Support the After School Study Hall program which takes place in the library from 3:40 to 6:00 through staffing and programming when appropriate.
• Lead innovative initiatives on behalf of the library such as developing and managing a Middle School “Maker Space,” managing the video production facility and materials, developing a pilot program to incorporate ebooks into the collection, running media literacy workshops for faculty and students, and systematically weeding the print collection.
• Work in partnership with the library team on vision, collection development and programming
• Act as an advisor to eight Middle School students.
• Participate in the life of the school community which includes grade-level outings, admissions events, faculty meetings, outdoor duty, and engagement with student life.

Requirements and Qualifications
A successful applicant will have a MLIS degree, a strong background with technology, some experience in a library related field, and an innovative, future-focused vision for the role of a library in an educational institution. Individual must have strong presentation and teaching skills paired with keen interpersonal skills and a sense of humor. A love of middle school students and an appreciation for this particular stage of their lives is a necessity.

Candidates must be able to work to develop 21st century critical thinking skills in our students as they navigate a media rich world; provide ideas and suggest resources to enrich and support the educational program of the school; supply students and teachers with materials and access to information to enable them to contribute to a sustainable, global society; work to develop a collection representing diverse cultures, experiences and viewpoints; and encourage students to take responsibility for their learning and to develop an appreciation for libraries that will facilitate lifelong learning. Additionally, candidates must satisfactorily complete a nationwide criminal background check.
