Alaska
Ann Myren
Haines Public Library


Ann has worked in Alaskan libraries since 1980. She has a BA in History and has taken graduate classes in both Environmental Studies and Library Science. Ann spent four years at the Media Center for the Lower Kuskokwim School District developing remote school libraries and training library aides. In 1985 she became Director of the Haines Borough Public Library (HBPL) where she worked closely with a talented staff and a dedicated Board of Trustees. During her tenure she oversaw the automation of the catalog, a building addition, the introduction of the Internet, construction of a new facility, and the creation of several award-winning programs. HBPL has received PLA’s “Excellence in Small/Rural Library Programming” award, ALA’s “Marshall Cavendish Excellence in Programming” award and the Gale Group “Financial Development” award. In 2005, HBPL was selected as the “Best Small Library in America” by Library Journal and the Gates Foundation. Ann retired in April 2006 and is currently providing planning, grantwriting and consulting services to libraries and non-profits. Ann and her husband spend their free time skiing, hiking, biking, canoeing, traveling and, of course, reading.
Alberta
Pilar Martinez
Edmonton Public Library


Pilar has over 16 years experience in public and regional libraries. As the District Manager, North and the Manager of a branch at Edmonton Public Library (EPL), Pilar is part of a team that leads, plans and implements strategies for provision of services, staffing and collections at EPL. Pilar has participated in and led many system-wide initiatives at EPL, including the Business Plan and the Customer Service Teams. She chaired an integrated service team represented by city departments, police, community organizations and the library for the Strathcona neighbourhood. Pilar has been the President of the Library Association of Alberta, chaired the Alberta Library Conference, and held executive positions with other library associations, as well as community groups (eg. Alberta Bison Association). Pilar is a “graduate” of Leadership Edmonton, Snowbird Leadership Institute and Northern Exposure to Leadership, experiential leadership programs for individuals with leadership potential. In addition to running, soccer, and yoga, Pilar enjoys spending time with her husband, Tim, and their two sons, Ethan & Jeremy.
British Columbia
Gwen Bird
Simon Fraser University


Gwen has been working in academic and community-based libraries since receiving her MLS from the University of British Columbia in 1992. Her undergraduate degree is in English from Cornell University. Gwen has been at Simon Fraser University for the past seven years, initially as the Interlibrary Loans Librarian, then Head of Collections Management, and currently as the Associate University Librarian for Collections Services. Prior to that she was College Librarian at the Nicola Valley Institute of Technology, an aboriginal college in the BC Interior, and has worked as the Librarian at the Pacific AIDS Resource Centre in Vancouver. Gwen has been actively involved in library associations and consortia in a variety of roles: as a member of the Negotiations Resource Team for the Canadian Research Knowledge Network, as chair of the Collections Group within the Council of Prairie and Pacific University Libraries (COPPUL), as chair of BCLA’s Academic Librarians in Public Service section, and as a member of the BCLA Board of Directors. Gwen knows the importance of balance. Outside of work her interests and passions are her family, long distance running and wilderness travel.
Idaho
Steve Poppino
College of Southern Idaho


Steve grew up in Davis, California and attended UC Davis and Cal State Hayward, where he earned a BA in Music. In 1982 he graduated with an M. Lib. from the University of Washington. In the fall of 1983, he moved to Twin Falls, Idaho, where he continues to work as the Reference Librarian at the College of Southern Idaho. Over the last few years he has become active in the Idaho Library Association. He serves on the Advocacy Committee and was the co-chair of the 2006 Region 4 Spring Conference. Steve also serves on the advisory committee for AnswerXpress, our regional virtual reference service. He’s married, to a librarian, and they have 3 kids, 2 cats, and a dog. For hobbies, he likes to read, play classical guitar, and paint.
Montana
Jan Zauha

Jan is very interested in professional development for librarians. She has been a lucky participant in many wonderful professional and leadership development adventures, including a summer-long appointment in the Newspapers and Periodicals section of the Library of Congress as a Junior Fellow (1992); 2-year post MLS appointment in the University of Michigan Graduate Library Residency Program (1993-1995); the Snowbird Library Leadership Institute (1999); and serving as a mentor and planner for the 2004

PNLA Leads leadership institute. Jan has an MA in literature from Clark University (Worcester, MA), and an MA in Library and Information Science from the University of Iowa (1993). She is involved in ALA, the Montana Library Association, and in PNLA (president in 2004-2005). She has published and presented on professional development issues in various venues, including her first IFLA in Oslo, Norway, where she presented her survey of the 2004 PNLA Leadership Institute participants and mentors. She is a Traveling Scholar for the Montana Committee for the Humanities and gets to talk about wonderful books and authors and library collections, and call it work. Jan is originally from Idaho and is ever so happy to call the West home once again. She is currently Reference Team Leader for the Libraries at Montana State University in Bozeman (1995-present). She will be going up for promotion to full professor this fall. Jan is the mother of two cats, Fred and Barney, the wife of an alien (ok, he’s English). She is a pusher of books and is involved in several book groups, running one of them
Oregon
Jey Wann
Oregon State Library


Jey is a native Oregonian with a life-long love of libraries and reading. She has a BA in Music and Communications from Linfield College. She has been with the Oregon State Library, working in various capacities including technical services, circulation and reference, since college. Currently she serves as Oregon Documents Depository & Acquisitions Coordinator and helps administer the search engine on the Oregon government web portal. Jey has been active in the Oregon Library Association since the beginning of the Support Staff Round Table, now the Support Staff Division. She has been chair of the Round Table, chair of the Special Committee on Preservation and Conservation, Secretary of OLA, and editor of the Oregon Authors bibliography among other positions. As of mid-march, 2006 she is contemplating whether she will survive her stint as exhibits chair of the conference committee J. In her spare time, Jey enjoys reading (of course), gardening, bicycling, chocolate and performing Renaissance and baroque music.
Washington
Phil Heikkinen
Orcas Island Public Library

 

Phil has lived in eight states: Arizona, California, Idaho, Michigan, Montana, Ohio, Pennsylvania and Washington – generally in the West since 1972. Prior to his current position as Director of the Orcas Island Library District he has worked at the Show Low and Tucson-Pima Public Libraries (AZ) , Lewis and Clark Public Library (MT) and the University of Michigan Library (MI). Phil has served as a facilitator using PLA’s well-known “Planning for Results” process and has been a member of WLA since moving to Washington in 2004. Phil holds a BA in English from the University of Idaho and an MLS from the University of Arizona. In his spare time Phil enjoys playing with his two young daughters, chess, and trail running.
PNLA
Charlotte Glover
Ketchikan Public Library


Charlotte has been the Youth Services and Programming Librarian at the Ketchikan Public Library for the past fifteen years. Her professional interests include early childhood literacy, library advocacy, program planning and readers advisory and she has hosted and produced a weekly radio show called “Booktalk” since 1991. Charlotte has a BA in Liberal Arts from St. John’s College, a BA in Education from the University of New Mexico and an MLS from the University of Washington. Previous to moving to Alaska, Charlotte worked in a variety of library settings, including school, academic, fishery and law libraries, and she taught reading at the Santa Fe Indian School. Always active in association work, Charlotte has served as the Secretary, Vice President and President of AkLA in years past and is currently President of PNLA after serving as the AK Representative. In her spare time, Charlotte enjoys reading, cooking, gardening and drawing pictures with her five-year-old son, Liam.
