About the District:
The Pierce District has two community colleges (Pierce College Fort Steilacoom located in Lakewood, WA and Pierce College Puyallup located in Puyallup, WA) and an extended learning program. About the Library:
The library encourages individual student research and exploration of ideas through a dynamic reference and instruction program. Library faculty members are active participants in the overall instructional mission of the college, participating in curriculum development, instruction, outcomes assessment and other teaching-focused endeavors. Pierce College Library received ACRL’s 2005 Excellence Award for innovation, national leadership, and integration into the college community. A new library will open at the Fort Steilacoom campus in 2010 with a focus on meeting the comprehensive learning needs of students.
Position Summary
Library faculty members are active participants in the overall instructional mission of the college, participating in curriculum development, instruction, outcomes assessment and other teaching-focused endeavors.
Essential Functions:
- Advance the strong teaching mission of the Library through an innovative, curricularly-integrated library instruction program and reference area.
- In collaboration with library and departmental faculty, design, teach and promote an information literacy curriculum within an outcomes assessment and abilities-based model.
- Assist in the selection and development of a Library/Media Center collection which strives for diversity in both subject and format of material.
- Creatively integrate emerging technologies into teaching and service activities of the library.
- Participate in the designing and visioning of an engaging library viable for 21st century learners.
- Promote library/media to the college community through innovative materials, programs and outreach.
- Contribute to the student advising program and other district wide efforts to improve student retention and success.
- Play an active role as a member of working committees dealing with instruction, student matters and/or district related concerns.
- Work effectively with colleagues and students of various cultural and socio-economic backgrounds.
- Actively participate in faculty department and division meetings.
- Perform other duties relevant to the position, as assigned.
Qualifications:
Required: Master’s degree from an ALA-accredited program. Academic library teaching experience. A demonstrated commitment to student learning. A strong public service orientation. Ability to work collegially to achieve goals. Excellent oral and written communication skills.
Preferred: A commitment to the philosophy of the community college. Community college teaching experience. Experience with assessment of learning outcomes. Experience collaborating with discipline faculty. Active involvement in the profession. Creativity in professional practice. Experience working directly with diverse populations and serving a diverse student body.
Terms of Employment: This position, which is contingent upon funding, is a full-time, tenure-track assignment of 172 contracted days per year, anticipated to begin September 2010. Initial placement of this position will be Pierce College Ft Steilacoom; however, evening, split daily schedule and/or work at more than one site may be included in the assignment.

Conditions of Employment:
Agency Shop, Full-time Faculty: As a condition of employment, all full-time faculty bargaining unit members must either join the Pierce College Federation of Teachers or pay a representation fee.
