Associate University Librarian
Naval Postgraduate School

The Naval Postgraduate School invites applications for Associate University Librarian (AUL).  This senior leadership position provides vision and effective leadership in enhancing and promoting library operations that reflect current needs and anticipate future information trends necessary to support the instructional and research mission of the Naval Postgraduate School (NPS).  With the University Librarian, the AUL shares responsibility for leadership and action in strategic planning; policy setting and implementation; and assessment and evaluation initiatives.  The AUL acts on the University Librarian’s behalf in her absence or as assigned.

The AUL is a key member of the library management team; participates in executive level NPS committees alongside the President, Provost, Associate Provosts, Deans, Associate/Assistant Deans, and Directors/Administrators of major support units (such as Comptroller, Information Technology, and Institutional Research).  The AUL also represents DKL/NPS to external constituents and professional associations.

Qualifications:

Required:

  • ALA-accredited MLS or other appropriate graduate degree (MBA, MPA, etc.) plus five or more years of progressively responsible experience at the department head level or above in an academic or research library or department setting. 
  • Demonstrated evidence of expertise and experience in resource management plus at least one of the following areas: assessment, strategic planning, grant-writing, or facilities management and space planning.
  • Ability to apply knowledge of the principles of management and organization in an academic library setting.
  • Ability to articulate how emerging technologies influence library budgets, services, and staffing necessary to support graduate-level scholarship, teaching and research.
  • Excellent interpersonal, critical analysis, and problem-solving skills.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills, including effective visual displays of information.
  • Supervisory experience coupled with understanding of human resources management systems.
  • Demonstrated ability to successfully multitask and manage detail. 
  • Client-centered service philosophy and collegial management style that is flexible, inclusive, and encourages staff development.  
  • A good sense of humor is also important.

Preferred: 

  • Professional experience in two or more functional areas of an academic or research library or department setting.
  • A record of effective collaborative efforts or grant-writing involving faculty, library staff, students, and external stakeholders.
  • Dedication to promoting and building an innovative and culturally diverse workforce at all levels of the organization. 

Position Information:

Full-time nontenure-track faculty appointment.  Candidate must currently hold or be able to obtain and retain a security clearance at the level of Secret or higher.  Salary is commensurate with education and experience.  Excellent health and retirement benefits.
