POSITION:                            LIBRARY ASSISTANT / CIRCULATION – Job # 22-08
                                                One (1) Regular Part-Time Position – 20 hrs/wk.
Evening and weekend availability required

SALARY:                               $14.03 - $18.80 per hour with pro-rated benefits, including retirement benefits through ICMA

GENERAL STATEMENT OF DUTIES: Tigard Public Library is a thriving, forward-thinking work place.  We serve the community by promoting reading and providing access to materials in all formats.  The library fosters lifelong learning and provides an array of programs and services to encourage the development of well-rounded citizens.  Our staff is dedicated, competent and customer-service based. This position is responsible for a variety of activities, including working at the circulation desk, user registrations, shelving books, providing assistance to patrons, and inputting data.  Primary duties are:

  • Works at the circulation desk providing information to patrons. 
  • Checks library materials in and out using computerized system, collects and records fines. 
  • Registers library users, issues patron cards, and maintains library card files on computer. 
  • Performs basic maintenance on office equipment. 
  • Prepares library for opening and closing. 
  • Shelves books and periodicals. 
  • Searches for and retrieves reserved books. 
  • Makes photocopies. 
  • Answers phone explaining use of library facilities to new patrons, including basic operation of some automated equipment.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:  Skill in operating computer workstation.  Ability to exercise good judgment in carrying out assigned tasks.  Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with all those contacted in the course of work.  Ability to deal tactfully with the public.  Ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing.  Bilingual skills in Spanish a plus!

EXPERIENCE AND TRAINING: A high school diploma or equivalent and two years of experience working with the public preferably gained working in a library, or any satisfactory combination of experience and training.
