Substitute Library Assistant
Timberland Regional Library

The Substitute Library Assistant position provides library patrons with circulation services, assistance in using the library collection and reader’s advisory services. The successful candidate will have a high school diploma or possession of a GED, some prior clerical experience, preferably some general library experience and previous training on a library system such as Horizon. 

Position Information:      Substitute staff work on call, as needed.  There are no guaranteed hours of work. 
                                          Must be able to work flexible shifts, including nights and weekends.
                                          This position will work primarily at the McCleary, Oakville and Elma libraries.

General Statement of Duties: Provides circulation services for library patrons and provides assistance in using the library collection and reader’s advisory services; does related work as required.

Distinguishing Features of the Class: This is front line public service and clerical work involving regular and recurring tasks and the application of prescribed procedures and methods.  Detailed instructions are given for new or difficult assignments and work is reviewed in progress.  An employee in this class works under the direct supervision of a Circulation Supervisor or Community Librarian who assigns work and provides instruction as needed.  An employee in this class does not exercise supervision over the work of others.  Employees in this class may be assigned temporary responsibility for the community library.

Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities: Preferably some knowledge of library circulation processes and procedures; some knowledge of office terminology, procedures and equipment; some knowledge of business arithmetic and English composition; skill in the use of both a typewriter and computer; ability to use keyboard and light wand for data entry; ability to understand and follow detailed oral and written directions; ability to use or quickly learn to use the library’s circulation system; ability to perform clerical functions with accuracy and attention to detail; ability to communicate well with others both orally and in writing; ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with other members of the library staff, representatives of other libraries and the general public; ability to process substantial numbers of books and library materials; ability to work under pressure in a public area; ability to deliver substantial numbers of books and materials from one location of the library to another; ability to attend occasional training and meetings at other library locations; ability to travel to another Timberland Library location for work; possession of tact, patience and courtesy.

Acceptable Experience and Training: Graduation from high school or possession of a GED, some prior clerical experience; preferably some general library experience and previous training on a library system such as Horizon; or any equivalent combination of experience and training which provides the required knowledge, skills and abilities.
