Definition

Under general supervision, the Library Technical Specialist performs specialized library duties, customer service duties, supplemental computer technical support, and related work as required.

Supervision Received and Exercised

The Library Technical Specialist works under the supervision of the Library Director, Librarian, or Circulation Supervisor.

Personal Contacts

The Library Technical Specialist meets and deals with the public on a continual basis. providing information and assistance to the public about the library’s public online catalog, general technology related questions, the library collection, and the library’s policies.

 Examples of Duties

The duties of the Library Technical Specialist may include but are not limited to the following general activities: answers telephone and provides basic reference such as
hours of operation, general location of materials within the library; types a variety of letters, forms, and bulletins pertinent to library matters; performs duties involved in the circulation and dissemination of library materials; performs processing of books and journals; uses a computer to check in and out library materials.

The specialist activities include: assists patrons in use of downloadable hardware, software and in the general use of the library’s databases and computer catalog; teach basic computer use classes to the public, assist in the training of library staff in computer programs, assist in downloading and development of library computer programs, basic maintenance and troubleshooting of computers, printers, and network.

Qualifications

Knowledge of: general library organization and terminology, basic filing rules, proficiency in Microsoft Word, Excel, and Publisher programs; strong analytical skills; ability to supplement tech support when none are available.

Ability to: assist patrons, track many short and long term tasks (good time management skills); follow detailed oral and written library procedures; communicate effectively; do accurate shelving; excellent customer service skills; work on a team, be flexible and  have a “Can Do” attitude.

Experience and Education

Experience :  Experience in customer service. Experience in general library and computer technical procedures.  

Education :  Graduation from high school or equivalent, AA degree preferred. Coursework in computer hardware, systems and networking or equivalent experience.
