The Irving K. Barber Learning Centre represents a rethinking of the traditional academic library. The combination of classrooms, seminar rooms, lecture theatre, academic units and the access to physical and digital library collections highlight the important role of this library in the teaching and learning enterprise. The Learning Centre is the location of the Chapman Learning Commons and a number of units, including the Centre for Teaching and Academic Growth (TAG) and the Office of Learning Technology, that provide resources and support for teaching and learning at UBC.
The University of British Columbia Library has an immediate need for an innovative and enthusiastic librarian to develop and market the Business Plan Accelerator (BPA) program for the Irving K. Barber Learning Centre.

Overview of this position:
The Business Plan Accelerator program will offer information on conducting secondary market research for specific types of small businesses in British Columbia. The guides will be based on content created by business librarians at UBC, and will list and describe information resources specific to British Columbia and Canada. They are designed for use in assisting small business owners or potential entrepreneurs in finding the resources needed to complete the market research section of their business plans. The guides will be marketed to libraries across British Columbia for use in assisting patrons in these activities.
Reporting to the Head, Chapman Learning Commons and Coordinator, Programs & Services, the Business Plan Accelerator Librarian will plan the technical platform for the accelerators, create the accelerators from existing content, work with business librarians on defining new content, test the accelerators with potential users, and market the product to libraries across British Columbia.
Collaboration is essential to the mandate and operation of the Learning Centre. Therefore, this position will work closely with individuals and departments across the UBC Library, the University and other institutions and organizations across BC.
Additionally, the Business Plan Accelerator Librarian will assist David Lam librarians, Sauder School of Business, in answering small business-related reference questions to enhance reference skills and knowledge of user needs and trends.
Preferred qualifications and requirements:
- A graduate degree from an ALA-accredited program in library and information science
- Experience searching online business databases
- Excellent spoken and written communication skills
- Excellent presentation skills
- Above-average information technology skills including web design and development
- Customer-focused attitude
- Ability to manage a diverse set of responsibilities and tasks both independently and as a team member
- Interest in extending the services of the Irving K. Barber Learning Centre to the community beyond UBC
- Collegiality
- Comfort with innovation
- Creativity
- Ability to work evenings and weekends
Terms of Appointment and Salary:
This position will be filled as a 1.0 FTE fixed term position for two years from the date of hire.
