POSITION:           Electronic Resources Cataloging Librarian

POSITION AVAILABLE:        Currently vacant

SPECIFIC RESPONSIBILITIES:   With a solid knowledge of cataloging rules,
exercise innovative thinking in approaching cataloging of new forms of
information including serials (print and electric), images, and networked
information. Work with Library and teaching/research faculty to bring
about creative solutions to bibliographic access issues. Perform liaison
responsibilities with other Technical Services units, Public Services, and
Library Systems to resolve problems and new technical challenges.
Participate in formulation of OPAC policies and decisions including
display issues, Act as team leader for cataloging of serials and
non-traditional materials, working with staff to plan and execute
cataloging/access projects. Reports to Head, Bibliographic Control in the
Technical Services Division.

GENERAL RESPONSIBILITIES:   Librarians are appointed as members of the
Washington State University faculty and are expected to participate
actively in the University's instructional, research, and service
programs. All privileges, obligations, and responsibilities of faculty are
inherent in such membership. Librarians are ranked in grades 2, 3, and 4,
equivalent to the academic ranks of Assistant Professor, Associate
Professor, and Professor. A progressive record of professional/ scholarly
achievement is expected of all librarians.

ENVIRONMENT:     Washington State University is a land grant university
founded in 1890, with an enrollment of approximately 18,500 students. The
main campus is located in Pullman, a town of 24,000 in the fertile Palouse
region of southeastern Washington; there are also three branch campuses
located in Spokane, Vancouver, and the Tri-Cities. The Washington State
University Libraries, a member of the Association of Research Libraries,
have current holdings of 1.7 million volumes, 23 CD-ROM workstations, two
LEXIS/NEXIS workstations, and a new on-line classroom in a recently
completed $36 million addition. We are currently implementing a new
integrated on-line system from Innovative Interfaces, Inc.

QUALIFICATIONS:    REQUIRED: ALA accredited MLS or its foreign equivalent;
knowledge of AACR2R, LCHS, MARC formats, guidelines under development for
electronic resources; experience with computer applications in libraries,
serials cataloging, and use of bibliographic utilities, preferably OCLC;
working knowledge of at least one foreign language. PREFERRED: Working
knowledge of SGML, HTML, TEI and visual basic programming language; strong
communications and organizational skills and aptitude for complex,
analytical work with attention to detail.

SALARY:           From $25,500 commensurate with qualifications and
experience.

RANK:             Librarian 2; faculty status.
