>From ALA Public Information Office:

The countdown begins...Because of the current great interest in all
things having to do with the Internet, but particularly children's access
and the use of filtering systems, we would like to again encourage you
to sponsor educational programs for the public, particularly parents,
during National Library Week, April 13-19, and on Log-on Day, April16.
Please let the Public Information Office know of any programs you have
planned ASAP as we will be highlighting these efforts by libraries to the
national media.

We would also like to hear about your ongoing efforts to educate
parents/the public and any experience you have with introducing Internet
access, promoting child safety on the Internet, the use of filtering
systems and public reaction, also any helpful suggestions to share with
other libraries.

Be sure to check out the new ParentsPage on the ALA Web site at http://
www.ala.org -- lots of great tips for helpings kids connect to the library,
how to raise a reader, child safety on the Internet and more.

FYI, the April issue of Sesame Street Parents features a profile of John
Edward Peters, senior chidlren's librarian at New York City's Epiphany
Branch Library, where he includes visits to homeless sheters ane
hospitals among his activities. Thanks to Graceanne DeCandido for
suggesting John.

The March issue of Parents features a prominent mention of Log-on Day.
The March issue of Child plugs library web pages for parents and kids.

Last but not least, NetDay, the national volunteer effort to wire schools
and libraries to the Internet, will be Saturday, April 19, during National
Library Week. Check out the Web site at http://www.netday.org to learn
more about how your library can connect with NetDay.
