Spokane Public Library (WA) is seeking applicants for the positions of
Deputy Director - Support Services, and Librarian I - Children's Services.
The library system serves a city population of 190,000 from a central
library and four branches with holdings of 1.8 million items, 100 FTE staff,
and a 1997 budget of $6.9 million.

DEPUTY DIRECTOR, SUPPORT SERVICES

This senior level management position is responsible for planning and
coordinating efficient, cost-effective and customer responsive system-wide
library services, including the collection development, acquisitions,
cataloging and processing functions.  The 1997 regular materials budget is
approximately $1m, with an additional $.5m budgeted from bond funds.  The
Deputy Director serves on the Director's Management Team and leads a team of
14.5 FTE professional and support staff.

Requirements for the position include at least ten years varied and
progressively responsible experience in collection development and
acquisitions, a graduate degree in library science from an ALA accredited
institution, and certification by the Washington State Board for the
Certification of Librarians (may be obtained following placement).
Management experience in a metropolitan library is preferred.  Proven
leadership skills, considerable knowledge of library services and
technologies, excellent written and verbal communication skills, the ability
to initiate and manage rapid change and to project a positive image are
desired competencies.  Beginning salary from $49,694 DOQ.  Benefits include
medical, dental, life and disability insurance; 24 days vacation, five days
personal leave, thirteen days illness leave, eight closed and four floating
holidays annually.  Washington has no state income tax.


LIBRARIAN I - CHILDREN'S

Excellent opportunity for a person interested in entering the field of youth
services and applying their knowledge in planning and executing children's
programs, activities and services.  Also provides general reference, readers
advisory and patron assistance.  ALA/MLS is required.  The current salary
range is $33,742 to $41,843.  Benefits package includes medical/dental/life
insurance, 18 days vacation and 12 holidays annually.
