Lemieux Library Plans Events to Celebrate 30th Anniversary of Library
Dedication -- Volunteers Solicited to Participate in Re-Enactment of the
Transport of the Library's Collection

On April 21, 1967, Seattle University dedicated the newly constructed A.A.
Lemieux Library. To celebrate its 30th anniversary, John Popko,
University Librarian, and Library Staff have scheduled several events.

The first birthday event is a re-enactment of the human chain which
re-located the library's collections from the 3rd Floor of the
Administration Building to the new building down the mall. (The original
human chain and move into the new building took place in Nov 1966,
pre-dating the formal dedication by several months.)

On Friday, April 18, 1997, at 12:45 pm, a brief ceremony will take place
on the steps of the Administration Bldg. This will include remarks by
the current university librarian, and the recognition of current and
former staff who participated in the original move or have been prominent
library employees. Following this brief event, a line of volunteers
will transport several items representing the library's collections and
services -- a book, a journal, a video, a CD-ROM disk, and a computer
keyboard -- from the 3rd Floor of Administration to the 2nd Floor entrance
to the Library on the Upper Mall. The volunteers will stand
side-by-side, as close or as far apart as necessary based on the number of
participants, and pass these items down the Mall.

Volunteers for this event are urgently needed -- faculty, administrators,
staff, students, and friends. "We have not calculated the number of
volunteers required to stretch, side-by-side, the length of the Mall,"
reports Popko, "but we're confident that many people throughout the campus
community will find this an enjoyable activity, and will volunteer to
assist us. And we'll have a little treat for them at the conclusion of
this enjoyable event." Call Kathy Fletcher, administrative assistant, at
x6222 to sign up. Impromptu volunteers can also participate the day of
the event.

Following the re-enactment of the human chain, there will be a small
birthday party on the Upper Mall outside the 2nd Floor entrance to the
library, with birthday refreshments for all participants and any
university community members who stop by help celebrate.

This event will begin at 12:45 on the steps of the Administration
Building. Remarks should require only 5 minutes, and the symbolic
transport of library materials another 5 or 10 minutes. The birthday
party will then run until 1:30 or until the limited
supply of birthday treats runs out, whichever occurs first.

One more Library birthday event is planned for Monday, April 21, from 7:00
to 9:00 PM. In celebration of the 30th anniversary of its building
dedication and in recognition of National Poetry Month, Lemieux Library
is hosting a special poetry event, organized and co-sponsored by two local
poetry publishers. The Poem & The World and The Raven Chronicles will
present a Poetry Circle in which local Seattle poets and translators will
weave poetry, language, and poetics in a circle denoting the poetry of
place, of interior and exterior landscapes. Readers will include Jody
Aliesan, Hulda Emilsdotter, Judith Skillman, Arthur Tulee, and Carletta
Wilson. This event will begin at 7pm in Shafer Auditorium (1st Floor of
Lemieux Library) and conclude around 8:30. The Library will host a
reception in the Lower Lobby of the Library following the readings, in
which poets and audience can meet and mingle.

For additional information or to volunteer for participation in the human
chain, contact Kathy Fletcher, Administrative Assistant to the University
Librarian, at 206296-6222 or katfle@seattleu.edu.
