POSITION ANNOUNCEMENT SAN JUAN ISLAND LIBRARY DISTRICT FRIDAY HARBOR, WASHINGTON POSITION TITLE: YOUTH SERVICES LIBRARIAN/ASSISTANT DIRECTOR FULL TIME (40 HRS/WK)-SOME SAT. & EVE. WORK REQUIRED SALARY: $34,068 - $41,892 APPLICATION DEADLINE: MAY 16, 1997 The San Juan Island Library District, located in Washington State's San Juan Islands, is seeking a creative, self-motivated individual to develop and manage library services for children, and to serve as assistant library director. The library has a collection of approximately 35,000 items, and an annual circulation of 132,000 items. As in any small library, professionals need to have a generalist approach to their position - in other words, be willing to do a bit of everything, from cataloging to Internet searching. Having said that, candidates for this position specifically must have an MLS degree, 3 years' experience in professional library work with at least one year in youth services, and a strong working knowledge of library automation technology. The library recently doubled in size and has very strong community support. To apply, send a letter, resume and three references by May 16, 1997 to Kathleen McHarg, Director, San Juan Island Library District, 1010 Guard St., Friday Harbor, WA 98250 PURPOSE OF THE POSITION: Plan, organize, and supervise children's services; provide reference and readers advisory service to the general public; assist, perform or assist to be performed operations related to the development and ongoing maintenance of the Library's automated system (Dynix); supervise staff and volunteers in the absence of the Director; perform other professional library functions. SPECIFIC DUTIES INCLUDE: 1. Develop and implement year-round children's programming for ages pre-school to young adult; evaluate, select and maintain children's collection; provide readers' advisory and reference services in children's department; establish and maintain active relationship with community schools; develop ongoing public relations program with local media; develop layout and production of program publicity, booklists, and summer reading program materials. 2. Provide reference and readers' advisory services to on-site patrons and in response to telephone inquiries; instruct library patrons in the use of library materials and automated searching tools; make recommendations for new reference services, materials and programs. 3. Perform or assist with the cataloging and classification of general loan and special format materials using local cataloging protocols, the WLN LaserCat system, and original cataloging tools; maintain procedures for the ongoing transfer of new materials into the Dynix system; assist in catalog maintenance. 4. Supervise staff and volunteers in the absence of the Director; maintain monthly staff calendar. 5. Other duties as assigned.
