POSITION ANNOUNCEMENT
SAN JUAN ISLAND LIBRARY DISTRICT
   FRIDAY HARBOR, WASHINGTON

POSITION TITLE: YOUTH SERVICES LIBRARIAN/ASSISTANT DIRECTOR
FULL TIME (40 HRS/WK)-SOME SAT. & EVE. WORK REQUIRED
		 SALARY: $34,068 - $41,892

APPLICATION DEADLINE: MAY 16, 1997

The San Juan Island Library District, located in Washington State's San
Juan Islands, is seeking a creative, self-motivated individual to
develop and manage library services for children, and to serve as
assistant library director. The library has a collection of
approximately 35,000 items, and an annual circulation of 132,000 items.
As in any small library, professionals need to have a generalist
approach to their position - in other words, be willing to do a bit of
everything, from cataloging to Internet searching. Having said that,
candidates for this position specifically must have an MLS degree, 3
years' experience in professional library work with at least one year in
youth services, and a strong working knowledge of library automation
technology.

The library recently doubled in size and has very strong community
support. To apply, send a letter, resume and three references by May
16, 1997 to Kathleen McHarg, Director, San Juan Island Library District,
1010 Guard St., Friday Harbor, WA 98250

PURPOSE OF THE POSITION: Plan, organize, and supervise children's
services; provide reference and readers advisory service to the general
public; assist, perform or assist to be performed operations related to
the development and ongoing maintenance of the Library's automated
system (Dynix); supervise staff and volunteers in the absence of the
Director; perform other professional library functions.

SPECIFIC DUTIES INCLUDE:

1. Develop and implement year-round children's programming for ages
pre-school to young adult; evaluate, select and maintain children's
collection; provide readers' advisory and reference services in
children's department; establish and maintain active relationship with
community schools; develop ongoing public relations program with local
media; develop layout and production of program publicity, booklists,
and summer reading program materials.

2. Provide reference and readers' advisory services to on-site patrons
and in response to telephone inquiries; instruct library patrons in the
use of library materials and automated searching tools; make
recommendations for new reference services, materials and programs.

3. Perform or assist with the cataloging and classification of general
loan and special format materials using local cataloging protocols, the
WLN LaserCat system, and original cataloging tools; maintain procedures
for the ongoing transfer of new materials into the Dynix system; assist
in catalog maintenance.

4.  Supervise staff and volunteers in the absence of the Director;
maintain monthly staff calendar.

5. Other duties as assigned.
