Reference/Instruction Librarian The University of Portland seeks an innovative applicant to fill the following position in the Wilson W. Clark Memorial Library. The Library houses over 350,000 volumes and maintains approximately 1,400 periodical subscriptions and extensive microform collection and supports both campus and off-campus programs. Access to a wide range of electronic resources is provided via the Library LAN and World Wide Web. Memberships include OCLC, PORTALS, and ORBIS, through which access to a number of these electronic resources is provided. The Library uses Innovative Interfaces for its on-line catalog, circulation, reserves, acquisitions, and serials control. Staff includes 8 librarians and 11 support personnel. REFERENCE/INSTRUCTION LIBRARIAN: This full-time, entry-level, position reports to the Head of Reference Services and User Education, and includes working scheduled hours on the reference desk, including at least one evening per week; assists in the planning and coordination of library instruction including: developing innovative instructional programs, preparing and presenting instruction sessions, promoting instruction with current and new faculty, and preparing appropriate handouts/instructional materials; may include other projects such as weeding or collection development, training of staff or student employees, committee service, and participation in special projects or assignments. REQUIREMENTS: MLS from an ALA-accredited program. Familiarity with a wide range of reference resources and library instruction, including the use of a variety of electronic and Web-based informational resources; knowledge of current library instruction methodology; excellent interpersonal, presentation, and communication skills; flexibility in scheduling and ability to work as a team player. Ability to work effectively with all levels of faculty, students, and staff are essential. Preference will be given to candidates with experience in HTML and Web page design, and knowledge of library networks. Position is available January 2, 1998.
