NOTICE OF VACANCY
February 10, 1998

TITLE:	Tacoma Campus Librarian

LOCATION:	University of Washington Tacoma Campus Library


GENERAL DESCRIPTION:

The University of  Washington Libraries seeks a librarian to provide
dynamic, team-oriented leadership for the Universitys Tacoma Campus
Library.  The individual filling this challenging position will be
responsible for continuing the rapid development of the library program as
part of the overall establishment of a new university campus serving a
diverse student body, currently around 1100 (850 FTE).  The library is
housed in new facilities in the heart of the Tacoma historic district.
This urban campus will experience sustained program and facilities growth
over the course of the next ten years.  Planning is already underway for
the next phase of development, including a doubling of the librarys
facility.

Reports to the Director, Bothell and Tacoma Campus Libraries.


SPECIFIC RESPONSIBILITIES AND DUTIES:

Works closely with Director, Bothell and Tacoma Campus Libraries to
establish and develop effective library and media services in support of
campus curricula and research.

Works closely with campus administration to foster and maintain effective
cross campus communication/coordination. 

In consultation with librarians and library and media staff, establishes
and develops effective policies and services in support of campus
curricula and student, faculty, and staff needs.

Supervises operations of the campus library and media services.

Facilitates a team-centered, consensus-based management structure for
librarians and library and media staff.

Develops incentives and opportunities for librarians and library and media
staff to initiate innovative and effective methods to increase quality of
library and media services and programs; promotes an atmosphere of
cooperation and efficiency at the campus library.

Oversees the integration of information technology and information
services at UW Tacoma.  This integration must be developed in coordination
with UW Libraries systems and electronic resources policies.

Establishes and coordinates collection development policies, involving
faculty, librarians, and others as appropriate.

In conjunction with Director Bothell and Tacoma Campus Libraries assists
in budget planning and monitors units budget.

Coordinates appropriate technical services support of Tacoma Campus
Library by UW Libraries.

Recommends hiring and termination of all permanent staff and hourly
employees; supervises, trains and evaluates staff.

Participates in committees, task forces, etc. as appropriate for UW
Seattle and Tacoma.

Actively participates in long range Campus Library planning and
development.  Actively participates in long range general campus planning
and development.

Assumes responsibilities as assigned and performs other duties as
required.


QUALIFICATIONS:

1.  Graduate degree from a program accredited by the American Library
Association required.

2..  At least three years public service experience in an academic library
required.  Strong record of promoting user-oriented service philosophy.

3.	At least two years of supervisory experience required, with
demonstrated success in launching new programs/services.

4.	Experience with automated library systems, CD-ROM and other
computer-based reference tools, and general microcomputer use and
applications required.

5.	Record of increasing levels of operations/management
responsibility in an academic library.



6.	Experience with media services support of classroom instruction
highly desirable.

7.	Strong oral and written communications skills required.

8.	Commitment to collaborative, team-based management practices, and
ability to work creatively under tight deadlines.

9.	Additional graduate degree or graduate course work in humanities
or social sciences highly desirable.


SALARY:	$45,000 minimum.  Starting salary dependent on background and
experience.

BENEFITS:	Librarians are academic personnel and participate in the
University of Washington Retirement Plan (TIAA-CREF, The Vanguard Group,
SAFECO Mutual Funds and/or Fidelity Investments) on a matching basis.
Vacation is accrued at the rate of 24 working days per year; sick leave at
the rate of 12 working days per year.  Excellent medical, dental and life
insurance plans.  No state or local income tax.
