PNLA Officer Nominations for 1998/99

Candidate for First Vice-President/President Elect:

Karen Labuik, Assistant Director, Marigold Library System, Strathmore, Alberta, klabuik@nucleus.com.

Professional Affiliations: Library Association of Alberta--completing second term as Second Vice-President--served as editor and on several committees--member of Alberta Library Conference Committee for seven years; Canadian Library Association--Library Advocacy Now! team member--conference committee, 1995; American Library Association; Public Library Association.

PNLA Experience: --LAA rep to PNLA since 1994--1999 Conference committee.

Goals: Renewal for PNLA has been an ongoing process since I attended my first Board meeting in Eugene. Each President has moved the process along, and I would like to be involved in the emergence of stronger and more member-responsive organization. Together, we will articulate a mission based on the strengths of PNLA--networking, information exchange, communication. We will forge a different partnership with our state and provincial associations. We will do better what we now do well, and rethink everything else. It will be an exciting time for PNLA and I look forward to working with the Board and membership in making this future happen.

1999 is the 90th anniversary of PNLA. I invite all of you to the PNLA Conference in Calgary, August 11-14, 1999, to celebrate our association's past, its future and our Common Ground. Yahoo!

Candidate for Secretary

Colleen Bell, Bibliographic Instruction Coordinator, Knight Library, 1299 University of Oregon, Eugene, OR 97403-1299, cbell@darkwing.uoregon.edu.

PNLA experience: Member since 1994; Chair, Library Instruction Interest Group, 1994-1996; Conference presenter, 1994-1997.

Goals: Because library budgets continue to shrink, travel to professional conferences becomes more difficult. And because of this, PNLA has been going through some difficult times from decreases in memberships and poor attendance at conferences. I look forward to helping to revitalize the organization and find a new place among the library associations.

Candidates for Second Vice-President:

Robert D. Hook, Reference Librarian, University of Idaho Library, Moscow, ID 83844-2350, Rdhook@uidaho.edu.

Goals: PNLA is a regional organization that crosses state and country boundaries and has long served to facilitate cooperation among libraries in the vast geographical area it serves. Interest groups are a very important part of that cooperation as they provide the forum in which members throughout the region can get acquainted and can interact quickly and easily. The are the webs connecting people with like interests. As Second Vice President, my goal would be to strengthen the interest groups. They are the ideal structure to speed communication of ideas and resources in an environment in which users seem to need more, faster than ever before. I have been a strong support of PNLA throughout my career and would enjoy the opportunity to serve it in this capacity.
