Marcilee Frederick is the new Director of Library Services at the Simona Maaskant Library at the King's University College in Edmonton.
Jennifer Thomas (nee Lazzari) became Document Delivery Librarian at Grande Prairie Regional College in August 1998. Thomas was previously with Augustana University College and replaces Helen Lee Robertson who has assumed the position of Liaison/Document Delivery Librarian at the University of Calgary Medical Library.
Gary Armstrong, formerly of the Electronic and Distance Education Librarian at Grande Prairie Regional College has resigned to move with his family to British Columbia. Armstrong was formerly Chair of Library and Media Services at Grande Prairie and a member of the LAA board.
Pam Ryan has been appointed Reference and Instruction Librarian in the Science and Technology, University of Alberta.
Patrick (Rick) Leech has been appointed as Manager of the Provincial Court Libraries System, Alberta Justice Department, starting January 11, 1999. The Provincial Court Libraries System includes a Head Office in Edmonton, a Regional Office in Calgary and 44 provincial court branches across Alberta. Leach leaves his position as Administrative Librarian at the Grande Prairie Public Library.
The Alberta Public Library Electronic Network Steering Committee welcomed Maggie MacDonald, Executive Director of Chinook Arch Regional Library, as its chair to replace Rick Leech.
Tammy McLeay is Lacombe Public Library's new Head Librarian. A graduate of SAIT's Library and Information and Technology Program, McLeay was formerly a library technician at Parlee McLaws Barristers and Solicitors and at PanCanadian Petroleum.
Leah Tymko has been appointed Director of Okotoks Public Library, a member of Marigold Library System. Tymko, a graduate of the University of Western Ontario, had been Director of the Wetaskiwin Public Library since 1996.
On March 1, Catherine Steeves joined the University of Alberta as Government Documents Librarian in the Humanities and Social Sciences Library. She has worked at the University College of Cape Breton and Nichols Advanced Technologies in Edmonton.

The Library Association of Alberta (LAA) is pleased to administer a grant from the Alberta Human Rights and Citizenship Commission to raise human rights awareness among Albertans by increasing the accessibility of resources relating to human rights available to Albertans through Alberta's public libraries. LAA will distribute up to $5,000 to each regional library system and library systems of the Cities of Edmonton and Calgary to acquire books, videos and recordings related to human rights. This project is being initiated to mark the 25th anniversary of the Alberta Human Rights and Citizenship Commission, and the 50th anniversary of the signing of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights.
LAA recently co-sponsored 2 Digital Licensing Workshops in Edmonton and Calgary presented by lawyer and international copyright expert Lesley Ellen Harris. These workshops were attended by over 100 Alberta Librarians representing numerous library sectors. As well, LAA will be co-sponsoring 11 Freedom of Information and Protection of Privacy (FOIPP) workshops province-wide between March and May with Alberta Community Development.
The Alberta Library Conference '99 will be held in Jasper, Alberta, April 29 - May 3, 1999. Knowlton Nash, reknowned Canadian journalist, and Joseph Janes, founding Director of the Internet Public Library at the University of Michigan, will present the keynote addresses. Gail Andersson-Dargatz, award winning author of The Cure for Death by Lightning and A Recipe for Bees, along with Neil Bissoondath, will give the author talks. The Alberta Library (TAL) will be launching the Alberta Library Card this spring. Members of the TAL consortium with extend borrowing privileges to customers of any of the participating libraries.
The 3rd NetSpeed Conference will be held September 23-25, 1999 at the Crowne Plaza Hotel in Edmonton.
