YRCA Featured at Oregon State Capitol

Sue Plaisance, Chair, Public Relations Committee, Oregon Library Association

On April 13 and 14, 1999, the Oregon Library Association sponsored a Children's Choice Book Awards display on the main floor of Oregon's state capitol building as part of ALA's National Library Week. The display featured the PNLA Young Readers' Choice Award program, along with the Oregon Reading Association's Pat Gallagher Picture Book Award program. The display's theme, "Oregon Kids Read - Oregon Kids Vote: Training Students in Participatory Democracy," gave the display a unique tie to the democratic process, appropriate to its setting in the state capitol. Many of the winning titles of YRCA for the past 50 years were displayed on a table covered with red, white, and blue bunting.

Many thanks go to Oregon State Representative Kurt Schrader and his staff, who made this display possible, arranging for space, tables, and refreshments in the state capitol's main display area.

This was an easy and exciting display to create and could be easily reproduced at any (or all) of the state capitols and provincial legislatures in the PNLA region. For more information, contact Sue Plaisance at (503)615-6500 or suep@ci.hillsboro.or.us.
