PNLA Quarterly, Vol. 63 No.2 Winter 1999
Annual Report of CANS Interest Group
Melisa Nicoud, Chair
CHEERS! PROAST! SALUD! SKOAL!
What does the beautiful Pacific Northwest and CANS Interest Group
members have in common? Answer? ADVENTURE and the pursuit of the
quintessential MICROBREW!!!!
Melisa Nicoud, chair of this year's event and Randy Bloom, found the Sun
Valley Brewery in beautiful, downtown Hailey, Idaho to be very accomodating
for a tour and tasting of their fine brews (not to mention the only
microbrewery for MILES around). The KART bus filled rapidly at 4:00 with
thirty-eight, thirsty people for a twelve mile jaunt through the gorgeous
Idaho countryside to the microbrewery. Gordon and his staff were
incredibly hospitable to this larger than expected group of librarian, beer
lovers. With dedicated CANS members and encouragable Idaho Library
Association members, all told, some 50 people attended. Five brews were
sampled from light to dark, great plates of hot hor d'oeurves served up and
wonderful commeraderie was enjoyed by all. It was agreed by many that this
is indeed an awesome social event and suggestion was made to perhaps "park
our CANS" Interest Group history on the PNLA webpage. Dennis Stephens,
librarian and microbrew officianado, we missed you at this year's great
event. As usual, due to your absence, we have faith that a subcommittee of
the whole will work with you to have this happen!!! Randy thought it was a
great idea too. :-) An equally wonderful suggestion surfaced from the
sudsy waters of Hailey--why not have a time for CORKS (wine lovers, we are
not a discriminatory group). Yes, it is the growth of an interest group
that some of us just dream about--CANS and CORKS!
Although Sun Valley is but a great memory, we look forward to next
year's CANS (and CORKS) in Calgary, Alberta, Canada. Marg Anderson,
Instructor at Southern Alberta Institute of Technology, stepped forward to
assume the chair (and opener) for next year's event. Thanks Marg--see you
in Calgary!
